If there is one trend that has transcended spring/summer and is equally trendy this fall/winter, it is the pinafore dress. Not the dowdy, straight-laced frock of yesteryears and definitely not the piece of clothing women from all-girls institutions have worn for a good ten years of their lives – the pinafore dress of this decade has been transformed into a fashion statement piece to add to your closet.
The pinafore dress is both convenient and stylish, as spotted on many famous Korean celebrities and drama characters. While not everyone is confident of pulling off the girly look, there are many types of pinafores, overalls and their hybrid counterparts that you can consider trying out.
The Strappy Sweet Flare
Great for our perpetual summer, this A-cut pinafore dress is perfect for casual outings. Under the pinafore, wear a blouse with big puffy sleeves, an off-shoulder ruffle top (also the rage these days), or a shirt with lace details that exudes just the right amount of femininity. Just remember to choose only one style and not all three, as the latter might borderline on overkill and give people a toothache.
The Chic and Classy V
Pinafore dresses are not just for the under-20s; these one-pieces prove women can wear them in professional settings as well. The more mature crowd will find this look easy to carry off. Layer a formal pinafore shift dress on top of a no-frills blouse or a crisp white shirt for that important Monday morning boardroom meeting that you are chairing. Turtlenecks can also up the serious factor of your outfit.
The Denim Dungarees
Originally worn by men who worked in labour-intensive industries, denim dungarees have a more rugged look and are best for off days or casual Fridays. Stay away from tartan and plaid prints if you want to avoid looking like a country bumpkin. Instead, wear a sleeveless crop, tube top or even a sports bra for an edgy look. In our unforgiving weather, it would be best to keep the second layer breathable as denim is already a thick enough material.
