Love them or loathe them, you have to admit those K-pop tunes are incredibly catchy.
You might hate a K-pop song when you first hear it (I remember being driven half-insane when ‘Sorry, Sorry’ first broke out), but soon you’ll find yourself mouthing the words (always that random bit of English thrown in) or busting out the dance moves.
Never mind if you don’t understand the lyrics completely – we say music is a universal experience that can convert even the most stoic listener. If you’re making your first foray into K-pop, here are a few recommendations to get you started:
1. For a party
‘Up and Down’ by EXID
The five-member girl group may have only been formed in 2012, but they’re already fast becoming one of the most popular acts. With lead rapper LE to balance out the bubblegum-pop vibe of the group, the pop ditty Up and Down catapulted the group to commercial success, earning them multiple number one positions on music charts. Having a party on Saturday night? Strap on your dancing shoes, because this is just the kind of music to get you into the groove!

2. For a stay-home dinner date
‘This Is Love’ by Super Junior
Arguably the kings of K-pop, Super Junior has triggered the Hallyu wave like no other. Immensely catchy hits like Sorry, Sorry, Bonamana, and Mr Simple have taken the world by storm and the boys show no signs of stopping, even as they recently won the Choice International Act award and its fan club won Choice Fandom at the 2015 Teen Choice Award. Aside from that, the versatile group secures its longevity and popularity by being consummate performers on stage and likeable goofballs off it.
In August 2014, they released their well-received seventh album titled Mamacita, and then a repackaged version called This Is Love. The title track is old-school R&B pop that you can definitely bop your head to as you watch the boys — all suited up, mind you — flaunt their slick moves. Get the mood going with a sexy candlelit dinner at home with the beau!

3. For pounding the treadmill
‘I’m Sorry’ by CNBLUE
The rock quartet is a break away from the regular K-pop fare. Yes, they’ve got pretty faces fronting the band, but instead of song and dance, CNBLUE would much rather kick up a storm on stage with their catchy pop-rock tracks, electric guitars, and crashing percussion. Need some motivation to keep at it on treadmill? Let lead singers Yonghwa and Jonghyun’s seamlessly complementary vocals tide you through!
