These days, bars don’t just serve alcoholic tipples. The food is pretty damn good too!
I don’t know about you but when I go out for drinks, I don’t have high hopes for the food options. The food served at bars are typically deep-fried and while tasty, are not exactly gourmet. However, if you’re looking for bars with great drinks and food, these three spots are sure to satisfy.
Jekyll & Hyde
Fellow Go Away editor Denise and I first tried the food here during the Singapore Cocktail Week media preview, and we were blown away. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of “shun”, where the focus is on using fresh seasonal ingredients, the dishes at Jekyll & Hyde are inventive and delicious. Some of my favourites include the hand rolled pastas, such as the Ragu Tagliatelle and the Squid Ink Carbonara. The pasta is flavourful and full of bite, and you’ll find yourself wishing for bread rolls to mop up all of the delicious sauce. The kitchen is headed by the talented Chef Javier Low, formerly from fine-dining establishment Iggy’s, so you can expect a certain flair in the dishes here. For a truly gastronomic experience, request for the Omakase set, which is a series of selected chef’s dishes created using the freshest produce of the day.

Ever since its opening in May 2012, Jigger & Pony has been wowing crowds with their imaginative (and very delicious) cocktail selection. However, it’s not just cocktails that they’re good at. Their food menu includes tummy-pleasers like the Steak Tartare, which is a dish of dry aged John Stone grass-fed beef served with spiced strawberry ketchu and boiled egg on sourdough, and the hearty Grilled Vegetables Platter, which comes with grilled zucchini, carrot and pumpkin, ember grilled capsicum, Kalamata olives, chickpea hummus, and Baba Ghanoush. Whew! What a spread!

Aqua Luna at Park Hotel Alexandra
If you’re looking for a spot to unwind away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Park Hotel Alexandra provides a cool respite. Specifically, its poolside bar Aqua Luna. Perched on the seventh floor of the hotel, the bar sits beside the gorgeous 25-m infinity pool and offers tranquil views of the neighbouring Southern Ridges. Their cocktail menu was specially created to reflect the laid-back vibe of the area and features a variety of fresh fruits, veggies, and herbs interspersed with lacings of gin and vodka.
For food, there is something for everybody, whether you’re hankering after a snack or something more substantial. A great snack item is the Battered Cauliflower, where the vegetable is dredged in a yeast batter made with curry and onion powder before being dunked into a cheesy béchamel sauce. For something more filling, try the flatbread, which is prepared daily in a wood-fired oven specially imported from Australia. Two popular flavours include Chorizo and Onion, which comes packed with fresh tomatoes, green chilli, red wine balsamic onions, and mozzarella, and the Crabmeat and Artichoke, which comes with a sea-riously delicious combination of fresh American Blue Swimmer crab, chunks of artichoke, Italian Roma tomatoes, and a sprinkle of parsley.
