Top 5 Karaoke Songs To Sing Your Lungs Out … According To Daren Tan Anything Goes

We love KTV sessions. Few things make us feel like a superstar more than holding a microphone and belting out an A-mei number in the confines of a hopefully soundproof room. You know who else loves to sing? Actor/singer Daren Tan, who also stars in this video with Hossan Leong as part of Go Away’s Drive For Good campaign! Find out how you can help him win $5, 000 for the Singapore Cancer Society.

He may be stealthily infiltrating teen gangs as an undercover police officer in the third and final season of Mata Mata (Mediacorp Tv Channel 5, Mondays, 10pm), but Daren Tan’s claim to fame harks back to early 2007 when he became the winner of Project Superstar Season 2. You may have also heard Daren belt out a popular Sam Hui song in Cantonese, with adapted lyrics to explain the Pioneer Generation Package and MediShield Life to dialect-speaking Singaporeans.

With Daren’s vocal prowess, you would think no one would want to sing karaoke with him lest their self-esteem gets battered to smithereens. Turns out, he does have KTV buddies! “There are a few joints we go to – Party World at Liang Court, K Box at Cathay Cineleisure Orchard, Tang Music Box at Clarke Quay, Teo Heng KTV Studio at Katong Shopping Centre, and K Suites at Illuma.” Below, Daren reveals the five songs he always sings at KTV joints.

1. “I’ll Never Break Your Heart” by Backstreet Boys

“I’ve been a BSB fan since I was in secondary school, and this song is my favourite from them.”

2. “Sunday Morning” by Maroon 5

“I was obsessed with this song when it was first released. It was also when Maroon 5 started out! This song sounds so different from the band’s current music style.”

3. “Superwoman” by Gary Cao

“This is a cover of ‘Superwoman’ by Karyn White. I consider it my vocal-training song everytime I sing karaoke. High level!”

4. “Hair Like Snow” by Jay Chou

“First, you need a pair of good lungs to sing this song. Second, you need a have a wide vocal range to be able to hit the high notes. That’s why this Jay Chou song serves as an indicator as to whether or not I’m on form for the karaoke session.”

5. “Airport 10.30” by David Tao

“This is my all-time favourite song to train my falsetto! It’s also a classic soul number to belt out and groove to while singing.”
