Can’t get enough of local skincare brand Handmade Heroes? Founder Lynsey Lim shows us where she gets ideas for her bestselling products.
In an industry that is constantly touting the latest “miracle” ingredient or product, it’s refreshing to discover a beauty brand that focuses on using all-natural ingredients. At Handmade Heroes, “natural” is not just a marketing term – founder Lynsey Lim personally sources for the best ingredients to go into her products and prepares her products by hand! In fact, her enthusiasm for natural beauty ingredients and traditional beauty methods has led her to travel to far-flung corners of the globe for research. She shares with us where she goes to get inspired:
“I spent two years in Malaysia where I was based in Petaling Jaya in Selangor. During my time in Malaysia, I also visited the towns of Taiping in Perak and Miri in Sarawak. While there, I learnt of Bedak Sejuk and how it is favoured by the older generation as their choice of beauty product. Bedak Seduk, which translates to ‘cool powder’, is made with rice and involves a lengthy process of fermentation. High in antioxidants, vitamin E, and vitamin B, I met more than a few elderlies who believe that Bedak Seduk is the cure-all for any beauty-related problems. Unfortunately, the once-popular product has fallen out of limelight with the introduction of more commercialised products. Our Black Charcoal Rice Mask was very much inspired by Bedak Sejuk. The rice powder aids in cooling and softening, while the bamboo charcoal helps clarify the skin.”
“When I visited India, most of my research was done in Kashmir, which is in northern India. Amongst all the herbs used in Ayurveda, my favourite to use in skincare is turmeric. Curcumin – the primary ingredient that gives turmeric its yellow hue –contains plenty of anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties. I find turmeric to be one of the most effective herbs in brightening the skin and reducing any discolouration or redness. Turmeric is one of the primary ingredients in our Beauty Warrior Face Mask in French Green Clay.”
“I spent six months in China and had the opportunity to backpack around the various provinces, including Lijiang, which is in the northwest part of China’s Yunnan province, and home to the Naxi and several other ethnic minority groups. The traditional Chinese are practitioners of creating beauty and balance from within – through nourishing and feeding the body with herbal tonics and the right food. Herbs such as goji berries and red dates are rich in antioxidants, as well as vitamins A, B, and C, all of which help maintain youthful skin. I love making a pot of organic herbal tea and adding it to our Beauty Warrior Face Masks in place of water. It gives the masks that added boost of vitamins and antioxidants!”
“When I was in Bali, I discovered that the use of rice alleviates the symptoms associated with summer heat, making it a common ingredient in many traditional Asian skincare products. Rice water is rich in minerals and nutrients, which helps nourish and brighten skin. You can use the leftover water from washing organic rice as an all-natural (and highly effective!) facial toner.”
