The Best CNY Goodies For Your Zodiac Food Notes

With so many CNY goodies to choose from, why not choose one best-suited for your Zodiac personality?

Chinese New Year is almost upon us! I don’t know about you, but one of my favourite things about the season is the awesome snacks. Because these snacks are typically only available for several months in a year, that makes them even more treasured. But with such a wide variety of goodies available, how do you decide? Let our zodiac personality chart and the folks at Yang Yang Cookies help!

You are a … Rat

Personality traits: Quick-witted, charming, and persuasive but can be easily agitated or grouchy

Try: Yang Yang Premium Dark Chocolate Cookies, $17.80. For the high-strung or easily stressed out, what can be a better remedy than chocolate? The cookies from Yang Yang uses premium dark chocolate imported from Japan!

You are an … Ox

Personality traits: Patient, dependable, and methodical. However, “Ox” personalities tend to hold grudges for a long time.

Try: Yang Yang Premium Kueh Lapis (Original), $52 for whole cake. For something that is reliably delicious, look no further than Yang Yang’s kueh lapis. Tip: While most people like eating their kueh lapis immediately, it’s better to give it a day or two as the flavours of kueh lapis continue to develop even after it’s been baked. When you’re ready to eat, take a few slices from the fridge and let it thaw for 10 minutes. Y-U-M.

You are a … Tiger

Personality traits: Rebellious, vivacious, and adventurous. They may have large egos, but are usually very romantic.

Try: Yang Yang Prawn Rolls, $11. For those who like a bit of sass and spice in their food, these prawn rolls don’t disappoint with their aromatic hae bee hiam (spicy dried shrimp) filling.

You are a … Rabbit

Personality traits: Reserved, elegant, and self-assured but can be conniving or even ruthless.

Try: Yang Yang Premium Kueh Bangkit, $17.80. This is another CNY staple – the version from Yang Yang is incredibly light and smooth, dissolving into a creamy, coconut-flavoured paste in your mouth.

You are a … Dragon

Personality traits: Brimming with positive energy, “Dragon” personalities can be egocentric and demanding, but never without a loyal band of followers.

Try: Yang Yang Premium Green Pea Cookies, $18.80. Despite its unusual main ingredient, this is Yang Yang Cookies’ bestselling item – definitely fit for a winning Dragon-like personality!

You are a … Snake

Personality traits: Graceful, intelligent, and sophisticated, but tends to be skeptical of others.

Try: Yang Yang Blueberry Cookies, $15.80. With its shiny and juicy blueberry filling, these cookies not only taste great – they look great as well!

You are a … Horse

Personality traits: Cheerful, popular, and warm-hearted, but is often easily distracted.

Try:  Yang Yang Sugee (almond), $15.80. On its own, sugee is already a crowd pleaser, but when paired with the subtle flavours of almond, these cookies are out-of-this-world amazing.

You are a … Goat

Personality traits: While sincere, well-mannered, and compassionate, “Goat” personalities also tend to be worriers.

Try: Yang Yang Kueh Lapis (prune), $55 for whole cake. If you’re looking for something not too sweet, this prune-filled concoction will certainly satisfy.

You are a … Monkey

Personality traits: Spunky, sociable, and confident, the “Monkey” can occasionally be a tad too self-absorbed.

Try: Yang Yang Premium Pineapple Tarts, $28. These handmade treasures are a loving and painstaking work of art — a sweet, moist pineapple filling is encased within a buttery ball of goodness — and is perfect for party-loving “Monkeys”.

You are a … Rooster

Personality traits: The “Rooster” is often known for being neat, meticulous, and decisive, but some may dismiss these traits as old-fashioned or inflexible.

Try: Yang Yang Egg Rolls, $22. Better known as “love letters”, these fragrant wafer-thin snacks are a must-have Chinese New Year snack! A consistently yummy snack for a person who thrives on consistency!

You are a … Dog

Personality traits: Honest, loyal, and amiable, “Dog” personalities are usually well-loved but they may sometimes lack self-motivation.

Try: Yang Yang Coconut Cookies, $15.80. Bursting with rich aromas of coconut, these cookies will remind you of an idyllic beachside holiday with a piña colada in one hand, and a breezy summer novella in the other.

You are a … Boar

Personality traits: “Boar” personalities may come across as rough or unpolished but they’re often thoughtful, courageous, and unpretentious.

Try: Yang Yang Premium Oat Raisin Cookies, $17.80. This is another familiar favourite and can be enjoyed all year round, not just during CNY.

For as long as she can remember, Vanessa has always wanted to escape to a place where no one knows her. But because that’s not always possible, she often retreats into the world of books and pop culture. When she does get to travel, she prefers going off the beaten track and back to nature. Some of her best memories include napping in a treehouse in Laos and cycling across padi fields in Bali.

  1. My favourite Chinese New Year snack is definitely pineapple tarts. I just can’t resist the buttery crumbly pastry and the sweet tangy pineapple jam. Once I start popping them in my mouth, I can’t stop till half a container is gone.

I love pineapple tarts best – made the way our grandmas used to make them – because I love the sweet yet fibrous pineapple filling, balanced by the buttery, slightly salty, and crumbly pastry. Such a perfect combination. I could finish a whole plastic container of them at one sitting, it’s scary! They’re comfort food for me, makes me feel like I’m back in the good ole days of my childhood.
