10 Reasons To Visit Hong Kong Disneyland In 2016 The Great Escape

Disneyland is not just for the kids. No matter how old you are, everyone can enjoy the magic of Disney.

While everyone is hyping about the soon-to-be-opened Shanghai Disneyland, we think you shouldn’t discount Hong Kong Disneyland. The latter is celebrating its 10th anniversary in a year-long celebration and here are 10 (very) compelling reasons to visit.

1. A brand new production!

Mickey and the Wondrous Book is a 28-minute live musical production that took over 1.5 years to plan for and produce. The result is a lively and entertaining show that takes you through some of your favourite Disney classics, from The Jungle Book to The Princess and the Frog and of course,  Frozen. This is Hong Kong Disneyland’s largest-ever production and it is truly a magical theatrical experience.

2. Incredible fireworks!

Extravagant fireworks have always been a part of the Disney magic but with the 10th anniversary celebrations, things have gotten bigger and brighter. Every evening, the night sky will be ablaze with fireworks, lighting effects, and an all-new video projection played out against the Sleeping Beauty Castle. Look out for your favourite characters from Beauty and the Beast,  Alice in Wonderland, Inside Out, and many more in this fantastical castle projection show.

3. Limited Edition 10th Anniversary memorabilia!

One of my favourite things about visiting Disneyland is bringing home bag-loads of memorabilia – they’re just too cute to resist! In commemoration of their 10th anniversary, Hong Kong Disneyland is rolling out a slew of limited edition merchandise, with nearly 220 products to choose from. According to Director of Merchandise at Hong Kong Disneyland, Jim Greene, some hot favourites include the Mickey and the gang 10th Anniversary set and the Christmas-themed Tsum Tsum set. He says, “Our guests love these and we can hardly keep them on the shelves!”

4. Plenty of goodies for Star Wars fans!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the biggest movie event of the year and Disney knows it. From Stormtroopers roaming the park for photo opportunities to a large collection of Star Wars memorabilia (more than 250 options to choose from!) to even Star Wars-themed dishes (Stormtrooper White Chocolate Mousse Cake, anyone?) … The Force is certainly strong in Hong Kong Disneyland.

5. Tantalising new dishes!

Apart from Star Wars-themed dishes, the park and its two resorts will also be introducing a variety of new dishes to celebrate the 10th Anniversary. Some special items to look out for include the Main Street 10th Anniversary Afternoon Tea Set for 2, which comes with a variety of Disney themed pastries and sandwiches, and a hearty banana shake. Other dishes you’ll want to order, if only for the Instagram-worthy factor, include character dim sum such as Baymax, Olaf, and Golden Minnie shrimp dumplings, available exclusively at the award-winning Crystal Lotus Restaurant at Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel.

6. New characters roaming the park!

Not quite a fan of Star Wars? No problem – there are plenty of other new characters to look out for in the park. Keep your eyes peeled for the latest Disney Villain, Lots-o-Huggin’ Bear from Toy Story 3, Princess Sofia from Sofia the First, and everybody’s favourite tubby superhero – Baymax from Big Hero 6!

7. New attraction at Fantasyland!

If you’ve always dreamed of being part of your favourite Disney stories, here’s your chance. Fairy Tale Forest is a living storybook garden where you can interact with five of your best-loved Disney Princess stories – Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella,  The Little Mermaid,  Beauty and the Beast, and Tangled. From the dwarfs working merrily in the jewel mines to Lumiere leading the enchanted servants of the Beast’s castle in a culinary cabaret, it’s like walking down memory lane back to your childhood. Oh, and keep a look out for Tinker Bell, who will be there in person for a meet-and-greet!

8. New co-branded merchandise!

Apart from hawking their own Disney merchandise, Hong Kong Disneyland has also teamed up with popular brands such as Coca-Cola, Pandora, and Crabtree & Evelyn to create exclusive, co-branded products that are only available at the park. Snap them before they’re gone!

9. Unlimited access to free Wi-Fi!

Ok, we know you’re there to unwind and get away from it all … but we also know some of you simply can’t live without your Wi-Fi connection. Well, you’re in luck because from November 17, Hong Kong Disneyland offers full Wi-Fi coverage with no password required. Now you can upload all your Disney moments to social media that much faster.

10. Special offers for accommodation!

For as long as she can remember, Vanessa has always wanted to escape to a place where no one knows her. But because that’s not always possible, she often retreats into the world of books and pop culture. When she does get to travel, she prefers going off the beaten track and back to nature. Some of her best memories include napping in a treehouse in Laos and cycling across padi fields in Bali.
